FAQ

What’s the difference between an open and a closed hearing aid dome?
  • Open Dome: Ideal for those with mild hearing loss. It allows more background sound for a natural listening experience.
  • Closed Dome: Suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss. It minimises feedback and provides clearer sound by reducing background noise.

If your hearing aid domes are too tight and causing discomfort, you have a few options:

  • See Your Audiologist: The best course of action would be to book an appointment with your audiologist who can replace your domes with more comfortable ones.
  • Do it From Home: You can find tutorials online to modify your domes but be aware this may void the hearing aids’ warranty.

The colour of your hearing aid dome depends on the manufacturer. Common colours include smoky grey and clear, but some manufacturers offer other options.

Yes, hearing aid domes are designed for easy removal and replacement every 6-8 weeks to prevent dirt build-up. Ensure the replacement domes are the same type and model to maintain proper fit and function.

You can replace a hearing aid dome in three steps:

  1. Hold the thin tube that attaches the hearing aid to the dome and gently pull off the earpiece.
  2. Select a new dome of the same type and size.

Push the new dome onto the earpiece until it’s securely fastened.

If a hearing aid dome comes off in your ear, do not attempt to remove it yourself as this can cause more harm than good. Instead, seek professional help from your audiologist, GP, or hospital outpatient department to have it safely removed.

Hearing aid domes are made from medical-grade silicone, which is designed to minimise allergic reactions. Some patients may be allergic to the cleaning agents used, so always check the ingredients of your cleaning products.

Power domes, or double domes, are designed for moderate to severe hearing loss. They are the most occlusive type, providing the least amount of feedback and offering powerful amplification for those with significant hearing loss.

Regular cleaning of your hearing aid dome is crucial to prevent infections. Wipe the domes with disinfectant after each use and store your hearing aids in a clean container. Always wash your hands before handling your hearing aids.

Consult your audiologist for appropriate treatment. Mild infections can be managed with painkillers and a warm or cold flannel. For outer ear infections, pharmacists can provide acidic ear drops. Severe infections may require antibiotics from your GP.

Signs of an ear infection include inflammation, pain, further hearing loss, nausea, severe ear pain, ringing in the ear, and balance issues. Consult your audiologist or GP if you experience these symptoms.

Ear infections can be caused by both viruses and bacteria. Inner ear infections are often viral, while outer and middle ear infections can be bacterial, fungal, or viral.
